How I lost 51lbs between
5.28.07 & 8.28.07 (3 Months)
1. Drink only water. NO
coffee, tea, milk, diet drinks, alcohol (including wine).
2. Eat 7 small meals a day.
Eat only when you are hungry & only enough to remove the hunger. For instance
if you sit down to eat a meal and you have removed the hunger after you have
eaten 2/3 of the chicken or … then save the rest for later.
3. Find some things you like
that are non-fattening. I like tomatoes, marinated artichoke hearts, roasted
peppers, celery, etc. You can eat them at any time. In my case I have to change
these every few weeks, so I don’t get bored.
4. Protein is OK. (See #2) I
eat turkey, most cold cuts, sliced roast beef, chicken, chicken & turkey
meatballs (they are precooked and safe to eat cold, I checked with Aidells even
though they are meant to be heated), chipotle, sun-dried tomatoes are better.
Stay away from teriyaki pineapple (the less processing the better).
5. I eat fruit cut up fresh
from most markets, Gelson’s, Trader Joes, Ralph’s etc. There is no limit on
melon, pineapple, cantaloupe, honeydew & strawberries. Many berries are OK,
try and limit the amount of grapes you eat. If you cut it yourself from a whole
melon you save money. If it is overripe put it in the blender and drink it,
it’s wonderful.
6. Eat at least 2 bananas a
day.
7. Plain beef jerky is a
good snack and smoked is better than teriyaki or other flavors. It’s full of
protein and low in calories.
8. Walking is important. I
started with my golden retriever at 20 slow minutes and now we are up to over
an hour early in the morning. You also de-stress walking with a dog. If you
don’t have a dog, imagine you do and go for a walk anyway.
9. None or as little as
possible of milk products. When buying cheese, cottage cheese, yogurt etc, it
is important you read the labels carefully as to carbs, calories etc.
10. If you eat turkey or
chicken try it without the skin. You will be surprised how good it is. Try
putting salsa on almost anything before you cook it in the oven. It’s better
than barbeque sauce or any other flavorings.
11. Try and avoid pasta,
potatoes and rice. Ideally you would be on 80g of carbohydrates a day or less.
That is the equivalent of 4 slices of bread or less. Imagine you were eating a sandwich
without the bread and mayonnaise when you eat protein (ham, turkey etc…)
12. I don’t eat dessert. If
you have to, make sure it is as low in calories and carbs as possible i.e.
strawberries.
13. Regarding soup or salad
dressing. If you can’t see through it, do not eat it. Mixing oil and balsamic
or other good vinegar with a little salt and pepper makes an ideal salad
dressing. You can eat most of the things on the salad bar, but often the
dressing is much worse for you that anything else. Same principle applies to
soup. If it is a cream base, I don’t eat it. If it is clear, like chicken soup,
vegetable soup or Wor Won Ton soup it’s fine. Steve’s special at his favorite
Chinese restaurant is Wor Won Ton soup without soup, just put it on a
plate, it cools faster and you can eat it easier.
14. No red beans, no potato
chips, tortilla chips, etc… Vegetables are a better snack (celery, bell
peppers, etc…)
15. Regarding going out to
eat at restaurants. Most restaurants will be happy to modify their menu for
you. I eat most broiled or sautéed fish with cooked vegetables etc..., instead
of potatoes. In Italian restaurants there is usually veal, chicken, meatballs,
antipasto and salads etc…no pizza or pasta for me.
16. I will post additional
details to the diet that I have forgotten, when I remember them.
17. Cheating. You have to do
it once in a while or you won’t stay on the diet. Occasionally everyone needs a
drink or a visit to Starbucks, try their iced coffee without any cream. If you
have to have something that is not on the diet, you may not lose that much that
day.
18. Weigh yourself every
day. Carefully consider everything before you put it in your mouth. Read the
labels in the market. You will be surprised at what you think of as diet or
light that actually may not be so when you read the carbs or calories in a
serving.
19. I am not a doctor or a
dietician. I don’t pretend to be. I just got sick and tired of having 100’s of
golf shirts with food dropped on them where the shelf that was my stomach stuck
out. If you need motivation take off all your clothes when no one is around, in
front of a full length mirror and take a good look at yourself. You might also
look at a photo of yourself when you were thinner. Your refrigerator is not
your friend, but it always has something for you to eat in it, that may make
you feel better. You just have to choose what it is.
This diet will be posted on
the At Home in the Valley Website www.athomeinthevalley.com ,
also at www.thesteinhardtdiet.com.
I’m sending you a copy
because you are a friend. I hope to find a publisher and sell it as a book (?),
so please don’t put it all over the internet, but you can give a friend a copy.
